Red River is a quaint mountain town located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico. In the southernmost range of the Rockies, Red River is surrounded by the Carson National Forest.
Winter in Red River
Red River offers all winter sports with miles of groomed runs for all levels of skiers. The Enchanted Forest is the area’s cross-country ski and snowshoe area with 33km of groomed trails and miles of backcountry trails. The area boasts many miles of groomed snowmobile trails. With excellent snow-making capabilities, Red River Ski Area opens on Thanksgiving weekend each year.
Summer in Red River
Red River remains cool through the summer and is the perfect location to enjoy the outdoors. Visitors are offered miles of hiking and mountain bike trails either in the mountains or around some of the area’s finest lakes. The rivers and lakes of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains offer great opportunities for fishing. Tour the Red River Fish Hatchery or visit Eagle Nest Lake State Park, known for its salmon and rainbow trout fishing. River Rafting the Rio Grande is a must for the adventurous traveller and tours are offered daily. The Red River Ski Area remains open through the summer months offering scenic chair lift rides and access to the mountains many hiking and bike trails.
With a 100 year mining history, Red River has six buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 8 mile Placer Creek Trail and the 3 mile Pioneer Canyon Trail will take you on a tour of the rich history of Red River. The Little Red Schoolhouse Museum gives insight to the history of this mining town dating back to 1895.
Red River has a trolley and bus system and allows visitors to explore the town freely. The most popular tour of Red River is the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway which takes you on a drive through Red River, Taos, Angel Fire and Eagles Nest. Taos offers a casino, shopping and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge overlooking the Gorge. Here you can relax in the natural hot-springs of the Rio Grande.
